Dump Trailer vs. Hauling It Yourself in a Pickup Truck

A pickup bed feels free until you count the trips, the tarping, the gate fees and the Saturdays. When a truck is enough and when the trailer wins.

Plenty of people in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco own a pickup, and the first instinct with a garage cleanout or a small demo is to load the bed and drive it to the landfill. Sometimes that is exactly right. Often it is the slowest and most expensive way to do the job, and it only looks cheap because nobody adds it up.

What a pickup bed actually holds

Our 10-yard dump trailer is 12 feet long, 7 feet wide and 4 feet high, and holds roughly five to six pickup truck loads. That is the honest comparison. A one-room cleanout that fills the trailer once is five or six round trips in a truck, each one loaded by hand, tarped, driven across the county, unloaded by hand, and driven back.

A truck bed also has low sides. Bulky items — a sofa, a mattress, a stack of fence panels — ride above the rail, need to be strapped, and are a real hazard on the highway if they shift. A trailer with four-foot walls holds the same items inside the rail with nothing to strap.

The cost of the trips

  • Time: each round trip to a disposal facility from most of Tampa Bay is an hour or more once you add the queue at the scale. Six trips is a full weekend.
  • Fuel: a loaded truck across the county and back, six times.
  • Gate fees: facilities charge per load or by weight at the gate. Six small loads pay six gate charges.
  • The unloading: everything you lifted into the truck at home you lift out again at the facility, usually in the heat, usually in a hurry with a line behind you.
  • Wear on the truck: a bed full of concrete or wet tile is hard on suspension and tires.

Against that, a weekly trailer rental is $375 flat with free delivery, free pickup and one ton of weight included. You load it once, on your own schedule, and it leaves when you call.

Where the truck genuinely wins

  • A single load of light material — one appliance, a few bags of yard waste, a broken-down bed frame
  • Items a curbside or county program will take if you deliver them, such as electronics or hazardous waste, which never go in a trailer anyway
  • A property where nothing on wheels can park for a week
  • Hauling scrap metal to the yard, which is a trip worth making because it pays you

Where the trailer wins

  • Anything heavy: tile, concrete, roofing, dirt. A pickup is overloaded long before it looks full, and the trailer's 5-yard heavy material limit and included ton are built for exactly this.
  • Anything bulky: furniture, cabinets, fencing, playsets. The four-foot walls hold it.
  • Anything that takes more than a day: a week-long remodel, a room-by-room cleanout, a yard overhaul. The trailer sits there while you work.
  • Anything you'd rather not do twice. Loaded once, gone once.

A common middle path

Use the truck for what it's good at and the trailer for the rest. Run scrap metal, electronics and hazardous items to their proper drop-offs in the truck — those need separate trips regardless — and put everything else in the trailer. You make two or three useful trips instead of six pointless ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tow your trailer with my own truck instead?

No. The trailer stays where we place it and is towed only by us. Delivery and pickup are free, so there's no reason to.

Is a trailer worth it for a small job?

If it's one or two pickup loads, probably not. Send a photo and we'll tell you honestly — sometimes the answer is our $89 single-item pickup, sometimes it's your own truck.

Does the trailer need a truck-sized space?

It needs a spot 12 feet by 7 feet plus a straight run for the truck to back in. Most driveways in the tri-county area work.
