How to Share One Dump Trailer With a Neighbor

Two small jobs on the same street can share one 10-yard trailer. Here's how to make the split fair, legal, and drama-free.

A garage cleanout that fills half a trailer and a neighbor's shed teardown that fills the other half are a natural pair. Splitting one weekly rental between two households is something we see regularly in Clearwater, Largo, Dunedin and Palm Harbor neighborhoods, and it works well when both sides agree on a few things up front.

One booking, one responsible person

The rental is booked online by one person, who pays the $50 deposit and whose card is charged the balance on delivery. That person is responsible for the trailer, the load, and any additional weight. Decide who that is before you book, and settle up between yourselves afterwards. We can't split an invoice across two cards.

Where it sits

The trailer goes on one driveway. Pick the one with the easiest truck access and the flatter surface, and remember the other household will be walking loads across to it. A trailer parked on the street is possible in some areas but brings its own rules, so a driveway placement is almost always simpler.

Splitting the space fairly

The trailer is 12 feet long, 7 feet wide and 4 feet high. The fairest approach is not to draw a line down the middle but to agree on what each side is bringing and load it properly together.

  • Break down furniture, cabinets and boxes before they go in — one unbroken sofa takes a third of the floor
  • Load heavy material first, low and spread across the floor, then fill up with light bulky items
  • Keep a rough tally of who loaded what, because weight is what costs extra, not volume
  • Agree that nothing prohibited goes in from either house

Weight is the thing to talk about

One ton is included. Beyond that, additional weight is $59 per ton, and we hand over the PCSW scale receipt so the number is not in dispute. If one household is loading old tile and the other is loading patio furniture, the tile is doing almost all of the weighing. Agree in advance that extra tonnage follows the heavy material, and there will be no awkward conversation at the end.

Timing

A weekly rental is $375, with additional days at $20 each. Two households loading over a weekend usually finish well inside the week. When you're both done, one person calls for the free pickup.

A five-line agreement that keeps it friendly

None of this needs a lawyer. It needs a text message both of you can scroll back to. Before the trailer is booked, agree on the following and write it down:

  1. 1Who books, pays the $50 deposit, and has the balance charged on delivery.
  2. 2How the $375 weekly rate is split — half and half, or in proportion to what each side expects to load.
  3. 3That any weight over the included ton is paid by whoever loaded the heavy material, using the scale receipt as the record.
  4. 4The day both households will be finished, so one person can call for the free pickup without checking first.
  5. 5That nothing on the prohibited list goes in from either side — no paint, tires, batteries, propane or liquids.

The reason to spell it out is not distrust. It is that the person whose card is on file is the one we talk to if a load is over weight or has something in it the facility will not take, and that person should never be finding out about the other household's tile after the fact.

When sharing is the wrong idea

Two light, bulky jobs share well. A light job and a heavy job do not. If one house is clearing a garage and the other is tearing out a tile floor, the tile needs to be loaded low and spread across the whole floor to keep the trailer safe, which leaves nowhere for the garage to go. In that case book two rentals a week apart — delivery and pickup are free on both, and each has its own included ton.

Frequently asked questions

Can three houses share one?

Yes, but the same rules apply — one booking, one responsible person, one driveway. The more people involved, the more important it is to agree on the weight split before anything is loaded.

What if one side fills it before the other starts?

That's the most common problem. Load together on the same day if you can, or agree on a physical share of the floor before anyone starts.

Is there a discount for sharing?

The rental price is the same flat rate whoever fills it. The saving comes from two households paying for one trailer instead of two.
