Keeping Strangers From Dumping in Your Trailer

An open trailer in a driveway attracts other people's junk. Why it matters, what usually shows up, and how to keep your load your own.

It happens more than you would think. A trailer goes into a driveway on Monday, and by Wednesday there's a mattress in it that the homeowner has never seen. Somebody drove past, saw an open container, and solved their own problem with your rental.

Why it costs you

  • Space. Someone else's sofa is space you paid for and can't use.
  • Weight. One ton is included; a stranger's load of tile or wet carpet counts against your ton, and additional weight is $59 per ton on your invoice.
  • Prohibited items. If the surprise contribution is paint cans, tires or a propane tank, the load can be refused at the facility — and that is your problem to sort out, not theirs.

What tends to appear

Mattresses, tires, old TVs, and bags of household trash are the usual suspects. Tires and electronics in particular don't belong in a standard landfill load, which is exactly why people are looking for somewhere quiet to leave them.

How to stop it

  1. 1Place the trailer where it isn't visible from the road if the property allows it — a side yard or behind a gate.
  2. 2Load it and call for pickup quickly. A trailer that sits full and open for days is the one that gets added to. Pickup is free and starts the moment you call.
  3. 3Cover it. A tarp over the load keeps rain out, keeps the load weight down, and makes it obvious the trailer isn't a public drop-off.
  4. 4Park a car in front of it overnight if it sits at the end of a driveway.
  5. 5Talk to your neighbors. Most unwanted contributions come from close by.

If you find something prohibited

Tires, electronics, batteries, paint and chemicals each have a proper route in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco, mostly through the county household hazardous waste and recycling programs. It's a nuisance, but it's a short trip, and it's cheaper than a refused load.

On commercial sites

A trailer beside a retail building or on an office lot is even more exposed. Fence it off if you can, keep it inside the site boundary rather than at the curb, and have someone check it at the end of each day. After-hours placement is available for businesses that would rather not have the trailer sitting out through a weekend.

Trailers at the curb are the most exposed

A trailer placed at the street, where a driveway is too short or the municipality allows it, is visible to everyone who drives past and is the one most likely to gain a mattress overnight. If the street is the only option, plan the rental around it: have everything staged and ready before delivery, load in a single day, tarp it, and call for pickup that evening. A curb trailer that sits for a week is an invitation.

This applies especially along busy roads through Clearwater, Largo and Pinellas Park, where a trailer at the curb is seen by thousands of cars a day. On a quiet cul-de-sac in Palm Harbor or Safety Harbor the risk is lower but not zero — most unwanted additions come from within a few streets, not from strangers passing through.

Frequently asked questions

Am I responsible for what someone else dumps in my trailer?

The person who booked the rental is responsible for the load. That is why it's worth checking it before pickup and keeping it covered.

Will you remove a prohibited item for me?

The driver will set it aside and leave it with you. We can't take hazardous or restricted items to the landfill in a standard load.

Can I lock the trailer?

The tailgate is not designed to be locked shut with a load in it. A tarp and a quick pickup are the practical protections.
