Yard Waste vs Construction Debris: Why Separating Them Matters

Debris is not one thing. Where a load goes and what it costs depends on what is in it, and mixing two streams that should have been separate is a common and avoidable expense.

The two streams

Clean vegetative waste

Branches, palm fronds, brush, leaves, grass clippings, tree trunks, sod and plant material. Nothing else.

This gets processed — chipped into mulch, composted, or used as biomass. That is only possible if it is genuinely clean, which is why facilities are strict about it.

Construction and demolition debris

Lumber, drywall, roofing, flooring, cabinets, fixtures, concrete, tile, siding, fencing and general renovation material. Sorted and processed differently, at a different rate.

What contaminates a yard waste load

A load that is 95 percent clean brush and 5 percent something else is not a yard waste load. Common contaminants:

• **Fence sections** thrown in with the brush from a yard clearing — extremely common
• **Treated lumber**, landscape timbers and railroad ties
• **Plastic bags.** Bagged yard waste often has to be debagged, and some facilities will not accept it bagged at all
• **Plastic pots, nursery containers and landscape fabric**
• **Rocks, gravel, pavers and concrete edging**
• **Irrigation pipe and sprinkler heads**
• **Soil in quantity**, depending on the facility
• **Garden hose, wire and string trimmer line**

Why it matters to you

• **Cost.** Clean vegetative loads are typically handled at a lower rate than mixed C&D.
• **Where the load can go.** Some facilities take one and not the other.
• **Time.** A load that has to be sorted or rejected costs everybody a trip.

How to separate on a mixed job

On a landscape overhaul that also involves removing a fence or a deck, you have two streams whether you like it or not. Options:

1. 1**Two loads.** Fill the trailer with clean vegetative waste, have it collected, then load the construction material. Cleanest and usually cheapest.
2. 2**A clear divide.** Load one type at one end and the other at the other, so it can be separated at the facility. Workable but less reliable.
3. 3**Accept a mixed rate.** Sometimes the simplest answer if the quantities are small and sorting is impractical. Tell us up front so we can plan where it goes.

Soil, sod and rock

These are their own category and they are a weight problem before they are a classification problem. Sod with soil attached is remarkably heavy, and a full trailer of it is far beyond a safe tow.

Storm debris

After a storm the streams get mixed by definition — a fence, a pool cage, a tree and a section of roof all come down together.

Local governments often run separate storm debris collection with specific sorting rules and timelines. It is worth checking what is being collected curbside before paying to haul anything. Our hurricane debris guide covers it.
