Five Things Not To Do With a Loaded Trailer

Most trailer problems come from the same short list, and all of them are avoidable.

A dump trailer is straightforward equipment and it becomes a problem in a small number of predictable ways.

1. Do not load above the sides

A load heaped above the top rail is not legal to move, sheds material on the road, and stops the tub tilting cleanly when it is emptied. Level with the rail is the limit, and it is a limit rather than a guideline.

2. Do not put liquids in it

Paint, solvents, oil, chemicals, and anything else that pours. They are prohibited, they leak through the tailgate, and they contaminate an entire load — which becomes an expensive problem at the facility.

Household hazardous waste has dedicated drop-off points across Pinellas and the surrounding counties. Use them.

3. Do not load only one end

4. Do not put anything hot or burning in it

Ashes, coals, anything from a burn pile that might still be smouldering. A trailer full of dry construction debris is exactly the wrong place for it, and material that seems cold can hold heat for days.

5. Do not assume it will fit

The most common cause of a difficult day is a job that was bigger than it looked. Rooms hold more than people estimate and garages hold considerably more, and material that is dense hits a weight limit long before it fills the space.

Send photographs when you book. We do this every week and we would rather tell you honestly that a job is two loads than have you discover it with a full trailer that cannot legally move.

And one thing to do

Cover it if it will sit. An open trailer through three Florida afternoon storms picks up a startling amount of water weight, and on a weight-limited load that is the difference between one trip and two.
