Sorting Before You Load: Where the Money Actually Is

On a large cleanout, sorting is the difference between one price and another, and it costs nothing but a bit of organisation at the start.

Why mixed loads cost more

Disposal facilities charge by material type. Clean yard waste, clean concrete and general construction and demolition debris all have different rates, and a load with a bit of everything in it gets charged at the highest applicable rate for the whole thing.

That means a mostly-clean load of yard waste with a few pieces of drywall in it is priced as mixed debris rather than as yard waste.

What to separate

• <strong>Scrap metal</strong> — appliances, pipe, wire, roofing metal, structural steel. This has value rather than cost and it is worth pulling out.
• <strong>Clean yard waste</strong> — brush, palm fronds, sod, trimmings, with no plastic, no rope and no construction material mixed in.
• <strong>Clean concrete, block and brick</strong> — no rebar sticking out, no wood, no dirt mixed through.
• <strong>Clean fill dirt</strong>, separately again.
• <strong>General construction and demolition debris</strong> — everything else.
• <strong>Hazardous and prohibited items</strong>, which go nowhere near any of it.

Electronics and appliances

Electronics have their own disposal route in Pinellas and the surrounding counties, and appliances containing refrigerant require the refrigerant to be recovered by somebody certified before disposal. Neither goes in a general load.
