Sod Removal: The Heaviest Yard Job There Is

Sod looks like grass and behaves like dirt. It is the material most likely to catch out someone who has only thought about volume.

Why it is so heavy

A cut strip of sod is a layer of grass on top of an inch or more of wet soil. Soil is dense, Florida soil holds water, and the water is a large share of the weight.

The practical consequence: a 10-yard trailer filled with sod is far beyond what can be legally and safely towed. Nowhere close.

How much actually fits

Rather than a volume figure, think in area. A modest front yard's worth of sod will typically approach the weight allowance on its own. A whole-property re-sod is a multi-load job, and often a job that wants a different arrangement entirely.

Tell us the square footage when you book. We would much rather plan swaps than have you fill a trailer we cannot legally move.

Reduce the weight before it goes in

• **Let it dry.** Sod cut and left in the sun for a day or two loses meaningful water weight. In Florida that only works between storms, but when it works it works well.
• **Shake the soil off.** Labor-intensive and genuinely effective — much of the weight is soil that could stay in your yard where it belongs.
• **Cut thin.** A sod cutter set shallow takes the grass and roots with minimal soil. A shovel takes far more dirt than necessary.
• **Do not water beforehand.** Some guides suggest wetting to make cutting easier. It makes the disposal dramatically heavier.

Consider not removing it

Depending on the project there are alternatives that avoid the haul entirely:

• **Sheet mulching** — smothering the grass in place with cardboard and mulch, if the timeline allows.
• **Sod cutter and reuse** — good sod can be relaid elsewhere on the property or given away.
• **Herbicide and till in**, where the plan and the timeline suit it.
• **Leave it under a hardscape** — pavers and patios often go over prepared base rather than requiring the sod be hauled off.

Each of these has trade-offs, and none suit every project. But hauling several tons of soil off a property is worth a moment's thought first.

Keep it separate from other debris

Sod and soil are their own stream. Mixing them with construction debris or with clean brush complicates where the load can go and what it costs.
